Charlotte Temple by Susanna
Rowson was a very
interesting book. As all or most of you know I hate reading and never read unless I have too. This book sparked my interest and I actually enjoying the book. It brings many questions to my mind and make me actually think about what I am reading. Some questions that come to mind are, why did La Rue choose Charlotte? Did she realize that when she was assigned to Charlotte that she could take advantage of her? Or was it because she knew that she was vulnerable? Was this a whole plot to go to the America? Does Charlotte know she got used for this purpose after he left her? It came to my attention that La Rue used her for her innocence and she feels no guilt towards what she did. I believe that La Rue and
Montraville are in together to get to America because he soon ditches her and La Rue ditches
Belcour. La Rue takes advantage of Charlotte's trust in their friendship by using her as a ticket out of England. Instead of protecting her and advising her to be safe she pushes her in risks way.In the end of the book the only person that seems to have some sort of guilt was
Montraville. He still tried to keep her living by giving her money that
Belcour did not give to her! I think that he cared
enough to keep her safe and alive but not enough to be with her. You see this very often in teenagers today where they trust somebody so much that they would do anything for them or do anything they say, but when you actually turn to them for advice (of something they got you into) they befriend you and leave you to deal with the problem on your own. This was seen when Charlotte went to La Rue one last time for help, La Rue could have easily helped her with all the money she had and the
wealth she had but instead she left Charlotte to die, in return she did as well!
I agree with what you were saying. I enjoyed the book as well. I don't think La Rue actually chose Charlotte, but rather was just there at the wrong time. It just happened that La Rue and Charlotte were friends, and decided to have Charlotte go along with her. I don't believe La Rue used Charlotte in any way. I don't think she was trying to take advantage of her at first. She was simply just bringing a friend along with her to America. But along the way going to America I believed she knew that she was going to befriend Charlotte. I think all in all this was an interesting book.
